APY versus interest rate
Annual percentage yield (APY) reflects compounding under the stated assumptions. The nominal interest rate does not express compounding in the same way. Rates may be variable and can change after you open an account.
Read the conditions
Some advertised rates require a minimum balance, qualifying deposits, transaction limits, or a promotional period. Review the rate tiers and what happens when you no longer meet the conditions.
Check deposit protection
Confirm whether the institution and account type are covered by an applicable government deposit-protection scheme, and understand the coverage limits. Protection rules differ across countries.
Calculate your real benefit
A higher rate is not always worth high fees, delays, or difficult access. For example, a one-percentage-point annual yield difference on $1,000 is roughly $10 before taxes over a year, subject to rate changes and compounding.
Keep savings organized
Separate emergency savings from money reserved for predictable bills or near-term purchases. Labels and automated transfers can help avoid accidentally spending earmarked funds.
Avoid misleading comparisons
Compare accounts in the same currency and jurisdiction, with similar access and protection. Never assume an unfamiliar platform offers bank-equivalent safeguards.
